P90X - Days 25-30

It's been awhile since I updated, so here it is...

Day 25: X Stretch - It was just a stretching day, and it was much needed. It felt really good to stretch and work on some more flexibility.

Day 26: Core Synergystics - The disc worked this time and this was pretty tough to do. I had to do it in a hotel room in Tawas and barely had enough room. The rolls are really difficult for me because I can't balance on my stomach for too long. I've always had that problem. I'm not sure exactly why, but I've also had a hard time doing sit-ups too. Other than that, Core Syn works everything and isn't bad at all.

Day 27: Yoga X - I did GREAT with Yoga. I'm becoming more flexible and was able to do a lot more of the moves. I hope that added flexibility will help me do the rest of the workout.

Day 28: This was a day of rest. I did have softball practice in the morning and threw a lot. Shoulder felt great throughout. I've had a right shoulder problem for years, but I think the exercises have helped strengthen it a bit. We will see how sore it gets in the days to come.

Day 29: Chest, Shoulders, Triceps & Ab Ripper X - This was the beginning of Week 5 and this was really difficult. I worked really hard and my left shoulder was burning. I think it was because those muscles do not get worked a whole lot, seeing that I am right handed. I had to stop doing some of the moves because my left shoulder hurt so bad I didn't want to risk major injury. This was definitely hardcore weight training and was different. As far as the Ab Ripper goes, I did ok, but some of the sit-ups really bother my stomach. It's going to be really had to strengthen and firm it up. Not sure how to deal with this, but I still push myself as much as I can.

Day 30: Plyometrics - Back to doing Plyo. I really think that rest week set me back with this. Plyo is so intense with the jump training that it can be difficult to get your energy and rhythm back. I did the best I could, but I feel like I took a step back with this routine. Hopefully next week I can do more. I think another problem was not eating well today. I was very low on energy and it showed. I need to eat better or find more supplements that will nourish me and give me energy. Something I will have to look into.

Tomorrow it's Back & Biceps plus Ab Ripper X. Should be another tough workout and I hope I can Bring It!

P90X Day 21, 22, 23, 24

I haven't updated about P90X lately so here are some updates...

Day 21 - This was just a rest or stretch day. Ended up just resting.

Day 22 - Yoga X: This was the first workout of week 4. This is supposed to be a recovery type of week. I'm still making a little progess in Yoga and getting a bit more flexible. My body felt kinda tight throughout, but did my best.

Day 23 - Core Synergistics: I had a hard time getting this disc started for some reason. Not sure if there was a scratch on it or what. This was my first time with this workout and it was really interesting. I was taking it easy and just trying to learn the workouts. They are definitely challenging. Hopefully my disc will work better next time. It really hindered doing this workout and concentrating on it.

Day 24 - Kenpo X: This was my second day of doing workouts in the morning. To me, it's a huge difference than doing it in the evening. I definitely do not feel fully awake and alert when I am doing this. I felt kinda lethargic. I definitely need to try and change this or this won't be very effective. I'm not a very good sleeper at night and I'm not sure if that could be part of the reason or not. Kenpo is one of my favorite workouts and I certainly didn't have the energy needed to make it through this workout, but I pressed on the best that I could. I need to continue to do them in the mornings though because my evenings will be busy starting very soon. Wish me luck!

P90X - Days 19 & 20

A couple P90X updates from the last two days...

Day 19 - Legs & Back, Ab Ripper X: I wasn't too crazy about this workout. I just didn't feel like I brought it for both. After doing the Legs & Back it felt like I tweaked my hamstring a little bit. It felt a bit strained today (Friday) but not terrible. Ab Ripper I didn't do as much as I had the previous time, but I'm still making slow progress at getting it all done. The oblique move is something I still can't do yet. I will get there though!

Day 20 - Kenpo X: Had a GREAT workout tonight! I finally got the hang of all the moves and it was awesome! I really worked out hard and was able to keep up with 95% of all the moves. Felt outstanding throughout the whole workout. Never really felt tired at all. This is truly a fun workout once you get the hang of all the moves. The key for me was to look away from the TV while doing the moves so I wouldn't get confused watching them do it. It worked and turned out to be a lot of fun!

Tomorrow is a day of rest or stretching. I'm probably going to stretch things out just to stay limber. Week 4 starts on Sunday and it's considered a recovery week. During this week it's Yoga, Core Synergistics (which I haven't done yet), Kenpo X, Stretch, Yoga, Core Synergistics, then Stretching. No lifting during this week. By no means is any of that easy. My goal is to continue to build balance and get my cardio better. I'm seeing endurance improvements & I'm hoping to see my body start to change a bit today. Hasn't yet, but I'm hoping. Gotta bring it harder in month 2! Can't wait to start!

P90X - Days 17 & 18

P90X update from last two days...

Day 17 - Shoulders & Arms, Ab Ripper X: I definitely worked the shoulders and arms hard. I do think my form could be better though. I continue to try and improve form while doing max reps. My left shoulder hurts slightly when doing some of the exercises, but it's probably due to the fact it's the weaker arm. As far as the Ab Ripper goes, I kept up with them better than I ever have since I started the program. Still need some improvement, but I was really pleased with how much more I could do ab wise. Hopefully it will continue to improve!

Day 18 - Yoga X: Yoga is always interesting to me. I am definitely getting more flexible, I can tell. My biggest struggle is keeping my back straight and upright in certain positions. I continue to try and not slouch and keep my head up, chest out, and back straight. Flexibility is definitely getting better. I think by doing Yoga and improving my flexibility, it will make the other workout programs a little easier.

Tomorrow is Day 19 is Legs & Back and the last lifting exercises of the week! Then it's Kenpo, Stretching, and then my "rest week" starts. I can't believe I've almost got 3 weeks of the program behind me! Looking forward to bringing it again tomorrow!

P90X - Day 16

Did Plyometrics today. I couldn't do it in the morning, like I had planned to start this week so I had to do it late at night. If there is one workout you need all your energy for, it's Plyo. I definitely need to bring it more and earlier. Pretty disappoined with today. Tomorrow is another day and it's Shoulders & Arms, along with Ab Ripper. It'll definitely be a day to bring it!

P90X Updates

I haven't updated in a few days. So here is a brief summary of the last few days of P90X.

Day 13 - Kenpo X: This was the second time of doing Kenpo and I did slightly better. I'm still not getting all the movements down, but I'm getting there. This is all about self-defense and incorporating it into a great workout routine. It flies by and it is a lot of fun. I still need to get all the movements down, but looking forward to doing it again on Friday!

Day 14 - This is a Stretch or Rest optional day. I took it as a day of rest for this week.

Day 15 - Chest & Back, Ab Ripper X: Back at Chest & Back to start Week 3. I had the bands I got from P90X and they definitely worked my arms. I was also able to do more push ups this week. I'm not a fan of push ups, but I am starting to get some strength and do more. With the Ab Ripper X, I am again able to do more. I still need to straighten my back up a bit, but it's getting a little better. Small steps in the beginning, equals larger ones, hopefully in the end. Plyo is tomorrow and I better be ready to bring it!

P90X - Days 11 & 12

No, I didn't skip a work out, was just too busy to blog it last night!

Day 11 - Yoga: This is the second time doing Yoga and it is always interesting. Yoga is a lot tougher than you think. It's an hour and a half of intense poses, positions, and stretches. It's pretty amazing how much of your body it works. One thing I know I have to do is get my back straighter. It needs to be straighter in all of the exercises, but working at getting it straight in Yoga will help too. Yoga is just as tough as the rest of the program, that's for sure!

Day 12 - Legs & Back; Ab Ripper X:
Legs and back isn't too bad as far as the workouts go. I think my legs are in ok shape. They definitely could be better, however, I'm able to do a lot of the exercises, calf raises, etc. Pull-ups is how the back is worked. I'm still trying to make it work with bands, although, I may have to start using the pull-up bar. Not sure if I'm getting anything by using the bands due to the door not being high enough. Still trying to figure out what is best with that.

Ab Ripper X, I'm still slowly getting better and doing more and more. When I first started this, I could barely do anything. I've slowly progressed to doing more and more each time. Another week or 2, I might be able to do almost the whole thing.

Tomorrow is Kenpo X, which is self defense exercises. It's intense, and there are a lot of moves. The first time I did this last week, I was all of the place and not in sync with the movements. Tomorrow I'm going to try and get the movements down before I do it too fast. Slow and right, is better than fast and wrong. Saturday is a rest/stretching day. So one more day of intensity and then a "rest" day.

My order of the recovery drink, P90X bars, and another supplement came in today. I'm going to try everything to see if I can lose some of this weight and get ripped!

I think next week, starting on Sunday, I'm going to try and do the workouts in the AM. I was contemplating doing it this week, but it was hard to switch during the middle of the week with the schedule I had. I'm hoping it will give me more energy throughout the day. I can already tell that I'm getting more flexible and my energy level is slowly moving up. I'm hoping with doing the workouts first thing, that will help a lot. Plus, I won't have to worry about missing a workout. Getting up early though, is not my favorite thing. I just have to be more disciplined. I will try my best!

P90X - Day 10

Day 10, I brought it more than I did yesterday, that's for sure. Today was Shoulders & Arms. I got my new P90X Bands today, and they make a huge difference compared to the generic band I was using. You definitely can feel more tension, which is a good thing. The biggest thing is form. I have to get my form better on some of those exercises. I had a hard time straightening out my arms on some of them, but that will hopefully come in time. I pushed myself as hard as I could on most of them. I was definitely more focused today than yesterday too.

Ab Ripper X was today too. I'm still struggling with these. These are extreme ab exercises. I do a little more each time, but some of them hurt my back. I think it's because I hard time straightening it out. I'm hoping the Yoga, and some of the other exercises, strengthen it in time. I will still strive harder to get my form better. It's better to do 5 with perfect form than 10 with bad form. I gotta always keep that in mind.

Tomorrow is Yoga. Yoga is interesting. Felt a bit awkward doing it last week for the first time, but I think it will be beneficial in becoming more flexible and make doing the rest of this program a bit easier.

So tomorrow..Day 11 - Yoga...I'm ready to BRING IT!

P90X - Day 9

Day 9 kicked my ass today, I ain't gonna lie. Plyometrics which helps your jumping, puts the X in P90X, as they say. It's their most intense work out. The first time I did it, which was last week, I hung in there pretty good and I loved it. Today, I just don't think I was in the right mindset. I couldn't concentrate and was dragging more. Not a good showing on my part. I definitely need to be more focused on what I'm doing to prevent me from doing it half ass. Half ass gets you nowhere. When I do Plyo again next week, I'm going to come at it full force and kick it's ass.

I think part of the reason why I was so sluggish tonight was because I was tired. I worked out late, which I have been doing a lot so far during this. I should probably workout earlier. I'm not sure if many people read this, but for those of you who do, what time do you workout? When is the best time to do it? Morning? Afternoon? It's hard for me to work out in the middle of the afternoon with work, but might be able to do it early evenings. What do you think is the best time?

P90X - Day 8

Day 8 of P90X was today. After a rest day yesterday, which consisted of stretching, it was back at Chest & Arms today. It's a pretty difficult workout and is pretty much all push-ups and pull-ups. I'm struggling with the push-ups right now. I haven't had to do push-ups in years. I'm definitely pretty weak right now, but pushing myself to do as many as I can while using the correct form, which they stress. As my baseball coach used to say, "Slow and right is better than fast and wrong". So basically, slow with the right form is better than fast with the wrong form and risk injury.

With pull-ups, I'm using a band that is hooked around a pull-up bar. The band I got is not what P90X suggests, but I did order some. So that might be where part of the problem is. They show both pull-up bar version and band version. I decided to use bands instead of weights due to the fact I travel a lot for work and carrying weights around all the time wouldn't be too ideal. Luckily, they show everything they do with bands as well. I'm looking forward to getting the right tension bands to improve my strength.

Every other day, they also have Ab Ripper X, which is on the end of that days workout DVD. This is tough. It's about 15 minutes worth of nothing but sit-up variations, working the abs and core. I definitely need a ton of work in this area.

After the workout today, I was tired and my arms feel like jello. But I'm energized and already looking forward to tomorrow's workout which is Plyometrics. Plyo is my favorite workout. You do a lot of different athletic related moves and you sweat a ton. It's a lot of fun and you feel great at the end. Sweaty, but great. Looking forward to it, even after a long day at work. Bring on Day 9, I'm ready!

P90X Workout

A week ago I began the P90X workout program. I have gained a lot of weight over the past couple of years due to being less active. I decided that needed to change. I wanted to drop the weight and get into the best shape of my life. I also want to eat better than I have in a long time. This means less pizza, pop, and other bad things like that. This is an extreme workout. I wasn't sure if I could do it or if it would hold my interest. After the first week, I grew to like the workouts and even look forward to them. I've never been one to workout regularly, but with this program, it looks like that will change. There's a different type of workout everyday and it incorporates a lot of athletic moves from a variety of sports.

The first day was all about chest and arms. I had a hard time getting through the warm-up! I couldn't believe how out of shape I was. As the days progressed, I found myself able to push myself a little further. I'm skeptical about getting ripped in 90 days, like they claim, but I'm going to continue to push myself more and more everyday and see what happens. The first week was more of a feeling out process, so I didn't push myself as hard as I could have. With a few adjustments of form, and equipment, I think I will be on the right track soon.

During the next 90 days (well 82 now), I will try and chronicle my journey to getting into shape and we will really see if this P90X will do what it claims. With my travel schedule for work, it's going to be a challenge to get this done day in and day out, with the limitations a hotel room has, but I'm determined enough to take the necessary equipment with me so I can stick with this program.

Wish me luck everyone!

NBC Chooses Ice Dancing over Hockey

A lot of people have been critical of NBC's Olympic coverage this year. They complain because they are not showing live events during the day (they can because there is only a 3 hour time differential between Vancouver and the East Coast) so they can show them in prime time when most people are home from work and are able to watch them. I have no problem with this at all. I personally think they could do it both ways, show the events live and then show it on tape delay in prime time for the rest of us. That's just my opinion, but is not my criticism. Here is my problem...

Tonight is the biggest International Men's Hockey game of the Olympics so far(in North America anyway, my apologies to the Czech Republic vs. Russia), United States vs. Canada. Instead of showcasing this game on NBC in prime time, the people in charge at NBC Universal, are moving this game to MSNBC, which is only available in about 78 million households. I highly doubt anyone can even name, off the top of their head, the channel number MSNBC is on their cable systems. What is NBC airing instead in prime time? Ice Dancing finals...Are you kidding me? I could see if it were the Women's, Men's, or even Pairs Figure Skating finals, but Ice Dancing? Come on now. I think this is a slap in the face to International Hockey & the National Hockey League (NHL). NBC has the broadcast network contract to air NHL hockey and it would seem to me that they would help themselves immensely if they would showcase a match-up like the US vs. Canada in prime time. Both team's rosters comprise almost all NHL stars. I would think that the ratings would not only be huge, but also would help ratings for their normal NHL coverage in the long term. I also think that because hockey has pretty much been relegated to CNBC, USA Network, MSNBC (with the exception of Czech Republic vs. Russia which is airing Sunday afternoon on NBC), that the NHL will probably not suspend their season for a couple of weeks (as they have the past few Olympic years) to allow their stars to represent their individual countries in the Olympics. Instead, we may see more Minor Leaguers or amateurs in the Olympic Hockey competition, possibly as soon as the Sochi games in 2014.

I'll be interested to see if the ratings for the hockey game & ice dancing are even comparable. I'm willing to bet that the hockey game will be the most watched program ever on MSNBC, however, due to it not being in near as many households as a regular broadcast network like NBC, it won't get as big a number as it deserves...And I think that is a shame.

Americans Still Missing in Haiti

Two weeks after the devastating 7.0 Earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, there are estimates of up to 5,000 Americans still missing. That's 5,000 Americans...The worst part is how recovery of bodies are being made. The Haitian government, though ravaged by this quake, still have enough control to organize heavy equipment and clean up. Bulldozers are picking up the rubble of buildings, along with dead bodies within the rubble and dumping them in the back of dump trucks. These dump trucks carry them out into the country, far away from the city, and these bodies that are mixed in with this rubble, are dumped onto the ground. No one is bothering to identify these bodies. No one is taking pictures, seeing if there is any identification on them or charting how many are there. They are simply dumping them and then leaving them. They do not even have the decency to throw some dirt over top of them. The pictures on television are disturbing and illustrate this point. What's most disturbing is that there are Americans in there. I know that we should not be held up above anyone else or any other people in the world, however, the U.S. government is heavily funding and involved in the rescue, recovery, and aid to this country. Why can't the State Department coordinate with the what's left of the Haitian government or force them to identify these bodies instead of throwing them away like garbage. This is sickening and wrong and highly disrespectful, not only to dead Americans and their families, but to dead Haitians and their families, and any other nationalities. Something needs to be done. Each body needs to be treated with respect. They were humans, not animals. Most of them were there doing their part, donating time, money, etc. to better this poor country, and this is the way they treat them? It is unconscionable. I know it's a tough situation there on the ground, but something has got to be done. We owe all the people who have perished so much better.
